To Jordan,
Since you’ve been gone, So is your zest for life, Tried posters by the score, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So is your emotional expression, Told animal welfare places, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So are your heartfelt ways, Asked vets, gardai and postmen, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So is your trusting face, Canvassed children at school, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So are your grey chin and owl eyes, Put pictures in newspapers, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So is your petite black body, Your story made page two, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, No more walks in the country, Played you on the radio, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, You can’t come in the car, Guards saw you on CCTV, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, So is your share in our family life, Been to travellers and markets, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, You can’t cock your head at my stories, Blasted internet and e-mail, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, No crazy running teddy shaking welcome home, Stood your big stand on Shop Street, I don’t know where you are.
Since you’ve been gone, No lead taking-shaking on the prom, Walked miles posting leaflets, I don’t know where you are.
I called you piglet, after Winnie’s but black, You gave us so much fun and laughter, We’ll never forget, Ducking your head in the car for a bridge, Never tiring of chasing a hand under duvet, Circling the cat lying, twisting, clawing in fun, (You must have missed that fun when Sandy died), Double jumping the couch and going right over, Always attentive to peeling vegetables, carrots yum yum, Running on the beach shore, chasing birds on the water, As if you could catch them, we all have our dreams, Catching the tennis ball, nudging back for a re-throw, Helplessly sliding along the wooden floor.
How I loved you coming for trips in the canoe, You didn’t like that jacket, despite it’s warm intention, Most places on the lake we have had you near, Good memories, especially the last, you jumped in yourself, Waking you in the morning was an arduous chore, You never did like the cold, damp or the wet, You’d delicately pick a good spot through the grass, And tear back in at the speed of knots, Against rules and misgivings you ran upstairs to say hello, And tore back down in case you were caught, On my week off we had sunshine, walks, fun, Until that Saturday I stayed home painting, you were lost in town, You often shiver and carry one leg so people gravitate with pity, Shivery and well mannered and friendly to all, I hope someone nice took you, with no collar on.
Walked the streets, travelled roads far and near, Called your name, pretended you were home, Heard many dogs barking, but barks never yours, Lots of phone calls, always another, Left your quilt in shed open, with lights on in case, Sometimes hear your footsteps, those well polished nails, I hold safe your bed and all your toys, and a rememberance envelope, And I miss you so much.
Dreamt of you frozen in the field of Rathdown House, You melted in my arms as I tried to give warmth.
You strayed in at 6 months old, And gave 10 wonderful years of your time, I hope you still have wonderful years ahead, And I really hope that you like where you are.
