Dear Dog Lovers,
Thank you for visiting the Vets Get Scanning web site. I would like to explain what our aims are and how you could help us.
I know how lucky my daughter Debbie is to have both dogs, Widget and Gizmo, back because of the media coverage, especially on GMTV. There are many loopholes that work against dog owners who have had their dog stolen and having experienced this first hand we know changes need to be made to the present system.
The aim of the Vets Get Scanning appeal is to get all Vets, or their receptionists, to scan all dogs on their books and for Vets to adopt a practice policy where all dogs are routinely scanned on their first visit.
By starting Vets Get Scanning we feel this is a positive step to help the many people still looking for their microchipped stolen dogs.
We need your help:
Please send or take the Vets letter, which you can download from this web site, to your vets and make sure you get a reply from them. Please add your name and address to the top of the letter.
Please add your support to our online petition, which we will present to The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Please ask your local pet shop or dog groomers if they could advertise The Vets Get Scanning Appeal. Either pass their details to us, or ask them to contact us and we will then add them to our supporters list.
Remember, Dog Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in our country. Be extra vigilant with your dog: we don’t want you to become another statistic!
Thank you for taking the time to visit our site and we do hope we can count on your support for this appeal. Vets Get Scanning seems like a simple solution to a growing problem and it really is! It doesn’t solve all the problems surrounding dog theft but it’s a start!
With all good wishes
Bruce Forsyth CBE

VETS GET SCANNING CAR STICKERS available now to download from the Vets Get Scanning site...click on "car stickers" next to "petition" at the top of the page...available in three colours red, black and white...the red is the best in my opinion as it's the most striking and will be seen well in car windows. Please take a minute of your time to print off a few and display them in your car windows, they need our support. Thanks

Vets get scanning - Yep I fully agree.... BUT there does seem to be a problem with this, as I have been finding out to my horror.
I too have a beautiful Akita still missing and I want my carpet slippers back, well that's just what she was like, permanently under my feet. And she is microchipped.
Now the HORRORS !!!! Well from what I have been finding out, the only thing that stands up in law is if you have your dog tattooed. Microchipping is a fantastic idea, until you find out there are several different types, each with their own type of scanner. So if your vet scans a chip that isn't compatable with his scanner, then he won't be able to read the information on it. I do believe there is a universal scanner that can read most of the chips available, but this leads to the second problem....
I got wind from a little birdie that my Akita was in the Romford area, so I got hold of a copy of that areas yellow pages and phoned as many vets as possible in the RM postcode areas. I contacted about 150 vets. LESS than 20% of those vets would automatically scan a new dog coming into their surgeries. There was roughly the same percentage again that didn't even have scanners and the rest gave all sorts of excuses why they wouldn't scan a dog, unless speciffically requested by the person bringing it in. They don't have the time or they feel embarressed at offending a customer were two main reasons.
Now if our stolen loved ones do unfortunately end up at a vet, who does have the right scanner for the chip implanted and does routinely scan all new dogs and finds your dog. Then all he/she will do is report it to the chip people, who will pass on the information that your dog has been 'sort of found'. Of course they will have all the details, but will be unable to pass them to you because of the 'Data Protection Act'. Oh what a wonderful world we live in !
Now to get these details will cost you a visit to a solicitor and the time they take, which means your ''spotted'' dog could disappear again for good.
Whilst I fully agree with the vets get scanning campaign, I do feel it is going in the wrong direction. This needs to be targeted at local MP's, to get the law changed.
Some sort of dog licencing needs to be re-introduced and microchipping needs to be impoved and standardised, with satnav capabilities.
If all breeders of specialised breeds were licenced as breeders and it was made law that all new pups were 'chipped' soon after birth and the chip number was also the licence number, which would be transferred to the new owner on purchase and held on a national database. If that dog was to go missing, upon reporting it to the database, the chip number could then be beamed to a satalite and the dog would be located within minutes with a map grid reference.
I have heard that someone is trying to develop a satnav microchip system, but it will only be any good once the law is also changed and dogs get better protection from the ever growing mass of thieving b******s out there.
Targeting our local vets to get them to act, well I think it better to target our local MP's.
Who's for a mass march on Westminster ??

Dogs, loving and true friends for life.

We really do need to step up this campaign, i just cannot believe why people leave their dogs tied up outside supermarkets at anytime and especially in soaring heat like is is at the moment.
I went shopping this afternoon and found this loving very friendly bitch laying flat out on the pavemet tied up. I waited for a while for the owner to come out but didn't see anyone, so i tucked a business card with some advice written on the back in the dogs collar and waited. The dog was getting loads of attention and then a member of staff from the Morrison's supermarket in Erith came out, saw the dog and went and got her a bowl of water, when he returned he also had a female member of staff with him and took the card out from the collar and started to read it, i went over to them and told them it was me that had put the card there, by this time a crowd had started to gather around the dog, and judging by the look of horror on their faces when i told them about dog theft they were all totally not aware of what is going on in this country. Anyway the female member of staff said that she was going to go back in the store and put an announcement over the loud speaker for the owner to return to their dog. I didn't actually see the owner take their dog but i went back into the supermarket and returned their water to them and also thanked them for their help. They told me that they do try to discourage it as some dogs that are left outside intimidate shoppers going in and also in hot weather they do not like any dogs left tied up outside either.
She then went on to tell that a few weeks ago a lady had parked just outside the entrance with the back window wound right down and left a sleeping baby their by itself, when questioned by the supermarket and advising her of the dangers her reply was but i was only gone 5 minutes!
As we know it only takes seconds to steal!
I would like to say thankyou to Morrisons @ Erith today for their help.
We really do need to spread the word and quickly.
Karen
Good on you Morrison's, other shops should take that particular leaf out of their book, and the government too. We may have laws against cruelty to animals in this country, but on the odd occasion when they're used, {note I did not say enforced} all that gets handed down effectively is a slap on the wrist, and told not to be so naughty.

Thank you 'awarrior' for the post you left on the 12th Jan. First of all can I say how sorry I am that you are still looking for your dog. Good luck and don't give up. Second. You are right about all your concerns re Microchipping and Scanning.
Since starting our appeal it has been bought to our attention that: 1. Not all Vets are implanting ISO standard microchip: therefore as you so rightly say, routine scanning will not pick up a non ISO microchip. 2. Not all small rescue homes are scanning:- dogs are being rehomed without being scanned. 3. Deceased dogs that are collected by local authorities and Highway Agencies do not all scan:- You will never find out what has happened to your animal.
Microchipping COULD be the answer to so many dog related problems, but at present there is no one regulating this practice.
We are in talks with an MP who is preparing an Early Day Motion for us, once we have this in place then is the time to get your own MP's on board. We are also associated with Dog Theft Action who have been working on all the different areas surrounding Dog Theft, please see www.dogtheftaction.com
Although our aim is to get all Vets to Scan we are very concerned with all these problems, which we will continue working on.
May we suggest if your vet has implanted a non ISO standard mircrochip - ask for your money back and report them to the RCVS. Debbie / Vets Get Scanning.
