Information About The Oldies Club
« on: May 09, 2007, 12:11:16 AM »

This is a new thread that will be used by The Oldies Club. Here is a bit about them:

Like most rescues we are always in need of donations to help us fund the vet care the oldies need.

We always need volunteers:

1) Foster homes: all our oldies are carefully matched to fosterers and they will stay in a loving home environment until they can find the perfect forever home they so much deserve.

2) Transporters: to get oldies in need to their new foster homes

3) We have fantastic supporters that help us by putting posters up publicising the work we do and making the general public aware of the fact that many older dogs struggle to find new homes just because they are older and they are constantly overlooked in favour of younger dogs or by putting up posters of specific dogs that have been waiting far too long to find their own retirement home.

4) We also have wonderful knitters that make "l need a home" coats for our oldies

5) Anyone willing to spread the word about the plight of older dogs and how rewarding these dogs can be and how much they have to offer to a new owner. Oldies come in all different shape and sizes. Some are just happy to potter about while others are still active dogs.

Thank you Mark for the introduction.

I have just posted a bit about myself and my family in the get to know you thread. My OH and I have 6 dogs and 5 cats Smiley.

I will keep this section updated with pics of oldies dogs looking for homes and we hope that your members will be able to help us anyway they can. We really need more foster homes as all our dogs are in foster care until they find a forever home. We also need transporters. Any help offered is really appreciated.

If anyone has an oldie, please post pics on here and tell us more about them and of your experience in adopting an older dog.

Oldies are very rewarding and too many times they get overlooked because of their age but they have so much to offer to a new owner. There are oldies that are just happy to potter about like our Scruffy, while others like our  Nell  are very very active. She has more energy than all the other younger ones put together and one of her nicknames is Duracell Nell.

Cocoa and Bishop are 2 lovely dogs that have been waiting for a retirement home for a while. We have a new poster that can be dowloaded here to bring them to the attention of people who have no internet access.

If anyone has a bit of spare time to put the posters up please download it here

http://www.oldies.org.uk/docs/Cocoa_Bishop_May07.pdf

This simple but effective method has helped other dogs finding new loving homes in the past.

My oldie is Sollie. He adopted me nearly 2 years ago at an estimated age of 10 ish. He had been rescued from a pound on his last day. He's a happy chap and very calm (I call him my teddy bear). He's a GSD x collie. His only 'fault' is, probably due to being a stray, he can smell anything resembling food from a mile away. The tiniest morsel has to be found at any cost  Roll Eyes I've no regrets at all about taking him on and would take on more oldies if I had the space.

Hi Clint, welcome to Alfie's.

I think my dog is fairly young but there are quite a few people here with older dogs.

Justine's got a really old German Shepherd called Dexter who's really nice.

Tessasmum has got some old dogs as well, but she's had a few problems with her computer and internet connection so she hasn't been posting much lately.

Hi Gio, you are welcome and please remember me when you need a home for a little yorkie or simular sized dog, as this is my love..... to care for the little ones that nobody else wants. They can be blind, deaf, incontinet and anything else...... I just love them.

My dad has a maltese terrier who we have had for over 2 and a half years, he was a reasue dog and we were told that he was so old that he wouldnt live too long, well we have had the pleasure of his company for over 2 years 5 months now. Snoopy lost all his fur last winter, but now it is all growing back thick and fast and Snoopy has a new look on life, he is well over 100 years old and is the boss in my house!!!

Justine
have you seen these 2 babies mother and son http://www.oldies.org.uk/?p=1844 Wink a bit bigger than a yorkie but still small. Mind you I have seen pics of your GSD, the only thing I can say he is gorgeous.

Chris
Sollie is lovely I really have a soft spot for GSD, or any GSDx. I know what you mean about the food. Scruff ended up in the pound as he was found straying he had lost all his fur and he was in right state. Scruff is a bit odd looking but he is such a character and I have never seen a dog eating like he does. He is always scofffing something, with the amount of food he eats he should be like a blue whale but he is not, I don't know where he puts it.

The thing with oldies is that sometimes they give you that woe me look and all you want to do is give them a real good hug, but they are no fools. There is nothing like an oldie to get humans to do their bidding when and how they want it  Cheesy

Another thing with the oldies is that sometimes they are written off with little time to live but it is amazing how many of them have gone beyond the time they were given as soon as they end up in a good home. When we adopted Clint I took him for a check up at my vet a couple of days later and I was told at best he had 6 months. My boy was a fighter and the love of my life. We had him for 13 months before he went to the bridge and I can only say that I really feel honoured to have been given the privelege to have shared part of his life. Clint was a GSD/Rottie x a wonderful dog and such a gentle giant.

One day I would love to adopt an old Rottie

Clint looks like another big teddy bear Gio.

When I first had Sollie, the vet was concerned in case he had kidney problems as he was soo thin but the rescue (Lizzies Barn) said he was all bones when he arrived with them. He did put more weight on although I have to keep him from putting too much on as he has typical GSD back legs and I don't want him carrying too much weight around on them.

The Oldies Club helps older dogs find forever homes. Homes and volunteers needed across the UK.

« Eddie (Doris Banham Sanctuary, Lincoln)Jack (Romford Greyhound Rehoming, Essex) » Ronnie-mum & Jack-son (Oldies Club, Suffolk)

Ronnie and Jack are inseparable mum and son Bichon Frises and are in an Oldies Club foster home in Suffolk.

They settled into their foster home from Day One and they both have a lovely temperament and are full of life. They have been vet-checked and the vet said that their general health is good.

Ronnie (mum) is 14 years old, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She has a heart murmur and kidney condition for which she is taking Fortekor 2.5mg, once a day. She will soon be having a renal scan to check her kidneys and a dental as her teeth are in quite poor condition.

Jack (son) is 12 years old, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He also has a heart murmur but does not currently need medication for this.

Jack is a real mummy’s boy and loves to snuggle up to mum whenever he can!

Their fosterers have said Ronnie and Jack are lovely, easy and calm dogs. They have slotted in very easily to their new way of life, and with the other dogs in the household.

They love to potter about the garden and have their afternoon snooze and play time. They really enjoy their walks and are good on lead. Ronnie is quite good off lead but Jack is not so good with his recall - he easily gets distracted! They travel nicely, curled up together. Bless! And they have their pet passports.

Ronnie and Jack can be rehomed with other dogs, cats and children.

If you can offer these sweet dogs a new home together, please contact Liz, the Oldies Club’s rehoming co-ordinator on 01603 405 951 or email: rehome@oldies.org.uk.

Ronnie and Jack can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit.

I would be intarested in these 2, however I am so sure that they will get a home together soon. I am more intarested in the very old dog, a dog, or 2 that cannot find a home! Please keep putting the pictures on site, or email them to me and I will put them on. Have you not got a little old chap that needs a forever home? Justine

Clint was a big softie, so gentle and loving. It is amazing that a dog like him had no hatred for what humans did to him.

Clint was found by a RSPCA inspector in a yard left to die of testicular cancer and starvation. The RSPCA took him in and treated him and he then went up for adoption. I was looking for an old dog the bigger the better and I fell in love with him the minute I saw him. I can't tell you how happy the staff were when we said we wanted him.

When we got Clint home you could see a lifetime of abuse in his eyes, no matter what he did he always waited for us to hit him. 3 months after he came home to us we adopted Nell as a companion for him and the changes in him were amazing. He saw that no matter how naughty Nelly was nothing bad happened to her. His real personality came through and he had a cheecky grin on his face all the time. He loved mints and blueberry muffin he would anything for them.

Unfortunately when we got Clint he was riddled with arthritis and our vet told us that we would be lucky to see Christmas with him (6months). After a period of remmission 2 days before Christmas day his back went again he had to have 2 injections and the vet said that if the 2nd one (on Christmas eve)didn't work within 24hr the only option was pts. Clint was a fighter and managed to pull through but his quality of life deterioted after that. In May 2004 he couldn't get up on his own anymore I always had to lift him up and hold him while he moved around.  On 29/05/04 I was with him when he went to the bridge. It  just about killed me having to make the decision to have Clint pts and there is not one day that I don't miss him. I can only say that I am so honoured to have shared some of his life.
