Swimming pools,petition

There is a new petition on the government petition site to get garden swimming pools fenced.

There are many dogs dying after jumping into neighbouring pools and not being able to get out. Some young children have also suffered the same fate. Let's help stop these needless deaths.

This is the Goverments response to the petition Sad

Swimming pools are not classified as buildings within the scope of Regulation 3 of the Building Regulations 2000. To amend the current Regulation would require changes to the law. It is, however, the responsibility of swimming pool owners to ensure that the pool and surrounding area does not constitute a health and safety hazard.

As the Government do not collect as a matter of routine accident figures for domestic accidents in swimming pools the Government have asked the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents if they have any information on fatalities and other casualties. This will help the Government gauge the extent of the problem and determine whether changes to the law are necessary.

The Government are aware that similar legislation came into force in France recently. However, this also included the fitting of alarms near pools and the exclusion of pools that are raised and are less than a certain size. The Government will investigate further how this came about and how it is working
