Vets and microchips
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:53:33 PM »

I've just emailed the RCVS asking if they can help make vets aware that all dogs need scanning if chipped dogs are to find their way home. I think the RCVS (Royal Society of Veterinary Surgeons) should help on this. I'll post any reply when I get it.  Chris (if anyone else wants to do this too - maybe they'll be more inclined to listen if they get several requests)

Chris, maybe if we do a letter addressed directly to them for us all to sign and send, also the same to the kennel club then they will have to take this seriously. What do you think? Justine

Petlog re The Kennel Club are having two big days at Hyde Park this week end 10th and 11th June trying to get the message across about microchipping.  They are offering a special price to all dogs on the day to be microchipped.  They have invited me to talk to people about how important it is and even more importantly to get vets scanning and microchipping.  If you contact the press office at the Kennel Club, I am sure they will be able to assist.  They know it makes sense.

Thanks for that Debbie. I'd be there if I wasn't so far away. I think maybe a letter to all the microchip suppliers would be in order too. We've got to get this moving. Chris

I  have  already  e-mailed  the  RCVS.  also  my  own local  MP.  re:  this,  Dogs  being  compulsory  scanned  especially  when  attending  Vet's.
The  two  years  we  had   Rosie and  she  attended  the  Vet  on  numerous  occasions  she  was  never  scanned  once.
I  did  this  at  the  request  of Candy ( Dolly's  Directive)   on  Dog  Lost  site  where   Rosie  is  also  reg:(by a  neighbour)
In  this  past  week  according  to  the  local press,  2 dogs  have  been  stolen  in Cardiff,  one  was  tied  up  outside  supermarket, one  was  taken  thro  the  car  roof  in  pub car  park, owners  in  having  lunch...
So  I  am  off  to  post  more flyer's  Re : Alfie  and  warning  people..Mary.

If you go on to www.the-kennel-club.org.uk and press petlog and then microchipping month you will see that they are holding events all over the country during the month of June.

Dear Debbie,
I see that The Kennel Club are holding a big event in Bournemouth Dorset on the 12th -14th August.  Do you think they would let me have a stall there  for Alfies.  Bournemouth is only an hours drive from me.
Thank you
Jess

Thank you Debbie.  I hope that you did not think it was rather a cheek but I am so anxious to re-unite dogs and stop this crime.
Looking forward to your news.
Love

We really need to get it across for the vets to do.  Both mine were done and it said so on their collars but it didnt stop them being stolen - it wont put people off unless they realise all vets will routinely scan new dogs inc puppies. I confess to not yet having my other dog done- it seems pointless! (i know its not really and it will be done sooner rarther than later but the hurry isnt there). Also when I told the chip company that they were stolen they said I could upgrade to their 'better' service and they would contact vets who used their scheme - so of course i paid up. So whilst distressed over my loss they took more money off me only for me then to contact all the vets in the region to notify etc and many were not aware as they used other 'chip' companies - what a farce!!! I confess to it being a bit of a sore point!!

I have today received a reply from RCVS. They say they decided against scanning all dogs in 2002 as they do not think it's a vets job to police this. So, they take our money to insert the chips and it more or less ends there. I will email them again with my feelings on their decision. Chris

Hi Justine, I will confirm time with you when I know.
How upsetting to read the reply via doggroomer the view of the RSVS and I totally agree with Karen.  Apart from using mircrochipping for the Pet Passport Scheme it's an expence that people could well do without.  Here in Spain ALL dogs by law have to be microchipped, why is this not in place in England.  We all spend a fortune at the vets!  I was also very distressed to see at the EuroTunnel that there is now no check in to take your animals out of the country!  So any one can take any dog into Europe!  Something has to be done to improve the system.
