I'M A YORKIEHOLIC
|
This really makes my blood boil as I & I know of a few other small rescues have offered spaces be it either temporary foster or with the view of paying for all the work etc to be done & then placing them in new homes, but have been turned down as 'we' are not 'recognised' rescues. For doGs sake, what have you got to be before you are reconised? Ill treat animals to the extent of them dying? Breeding & then selling the pups? if that is reconised then no I am not, but having successfully rehomed 85 little ones (not all Yorkies) last year & already had 10 in since Jan 2008 I must be fairly competent & they have all seen a vet & up to date with vacs etc. When will the larger rescues that plead for help with poundies realise that just because I dont have kennels & use very good well vetted foster carers we are just as capable, possibly even more so in helping. A dog living in a home environment can be assessed easier/quicker thus allowing more to be helped instead of being PTS Sorry off Soap Box. RIP sweet babies, no more pain & hurt for you all now.Have fun at the bridge where all is wonderful. xx

I agree with every word that Yorkie Girl has written. There is less stress for the dogs rehomed by YG and others who use their own homes and these rehomed dogs settle in very quickly (I know because I've had one from YG) instead of being frightened to death by the noise and smell of a kennel environment. Mind you, better for a dog to be in kennels than PTS of course.
I think ALL breeding of dogs should be stopped for 10 years (especially Staffies as there are soooooooo many looking for homes) & if you want a dog it wld have to be a homeless one but how that legislation could be policed I've no idea .
Doesn't bear thinking about the number of dogs that are PTS every day

Today is the death day of nobody’s dog Nothing will mark it but a note in the log I’m faceless and nameless and no tears will fall For I know in your world I have no worth at all
To you, my sweet someone, I’m a friend and a dear We ran the wind daily and you held me so near But the gate was left open – I chanced a walk on my own I’d have cowered in fear if only I’d known
I know how you cried on the night that I strayed I know how you searched, I know how you prayed But I went to a pound far far from our home Where I crouched in despair in my kennel alone
I know that you phoned for I heard your dear voice And I hoped you would hear me so I barked myself hoarse Although I’m a Lab cross with stockings all white On their form I’m a Staff cross – the description’s not right
So they said I’m not here and I sank to my bed My kennel cough’s worse and I can’t raise my head The rescue came yesterday but they hadn’t a place For an un-neutered cross breed with his mucus-streaked face
If only you’d come to search for me here You would have known me at once, you would have sensed I was near You would have sorted my ills, you would have carried me home And I promise our God no more would I roam
Now my eyes plead for mercy for my seven days are done And I am waiting with dread for the final vet run No arms will caress me as they inject me to death No words will comfort me as I take my last breath
When the body man comes, it is fitting I’m found In a bin bag in the freezer in the depths of the pound Thrown away like the rubbish - no respect and no shame Denied even the time to find you again
My loyalty and devotion they did cruelly betray Without microchip or nametag, I am just a dispensable stray Once waggy-tailed, once proud, beloved and free Oh Dad look with pain at what mankind’s done to me!

Sadly, the attitude towards neutering and being a responsible owner both here in Northern Ireland and also in the South of Ireland is woeful.
We have the highest rates of strays being PTS, not only in the UK but in Europe.
Rescues - such as ourselves at NIAR and several others battle very hard to save as many as possible but it does often feel like you are fighting a losing battle when people won't take the very simple steps - such as neutering etc.
It is maddening but I have to say that without people like the Dundalk Dog ladies there would be hundreds more dogs being PTS.

I hate the thought of any healthy animal having to be PTS and always have. It's simply too easy to go get a pet these days and people arn't educated before they get that cute furry bundle that 6 months on is a much bigger, stronger furry bundle and possibly 'little Johnny' has become bored with his new pet! Breeders too are to blame, not just those who puppy farm (that's despicable!) but some breeders DO breed for cash, and far too often in my opinion too. As a breeder myself I've only ever bred to both better the breed and because I wanted another myself. Nope my bank balance has always been red because health testing and screening don't come cheap but in my opinion it's totally irresponsible to breed anything without screening for as much as is humanly possible and having all tests come in clean allows you to breed, in doing so YOU are the one responsible, you MUST be prepared to take an amimal back, if it's inconvenient that's just tough, you should have thought about that before you bred your girl! You still should (in my opinion) take it back.
Now whilst breeders can breed willy nilly, and people can aquire a pet so very easily there will be full pounds. The KC are only interested in getting the cash in and keeping the coffers full, (again just my opinion) If breeders HAD to health screen that would cut the numbers, if it were compulsory to have pets speyed and neutered that too would cut the numbers, but there's still be those who simply don't give a stuff and dump their pet on the highway, still those who will breed the life out of their girls for a fast buck, and of course there are the genuine, loving caring people who lose their pet or have it stolen through no fault of their own, and to those people my heart goes out to each and every one of them.
What do the rescue centres do when there's no room left at the inn?? What do the sancturaries do when they're full to overflowing?? I don't have the answers, by God I wish I did, I have a few good ideas but who the h*ll am I, I'm nothing, a tiny fish in a huge ocean. Great Britain a nation of animal lovers...........hmmmmm, well I'll reserve comment on that one......and bet I'm not the only one either!!!!!
I apologise for waffling on but I get soooo damned annoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
