Fears that dog nappers may be at work in the Camelford area have been voiced by two collie owners whose dogs disappeared last month.
Joy Lethbridge, of Danmore Close, Tintagel, lost her collie cross dog Rolo over a week ago as he walked with her husband at Glebe Cliff, Tintagel.Cathryn Franklin's working 12-month-old collie was taken from the yard at nearby Trebarwith Farm on February 9.
At first it was thought that Rolo, a 22-month-old predominantly white collie with black markings, may have gone over the cliff but searches by coastguards found nothing and no dog has been washed ashore.
Mrs Lethbridge said that her husband was walking towards the church near the cliffs when he turned around and found the collie was gone.
"We have gone over and over this and have driven around and spoken to other people who have also lost dogs," she said.
She fears Rolo, a family pet, may have been stolen, as she has heard about other collies going missing. Rolo is a friendly dog who is good with children and well-known in the area.
"The sad thing about it is, he was a rescue and we rescued him at four months old," said Mrs Lethbridge, who has put up posters and contacted local radio stations, the RSPCA, dog warden and police.
Mrs Lethbridge said she had contacted the Cornish Guardian because she felt the issue should be publicised.
Meanwhile Mrs Franklin's dog had been in the yard of her farm when a car was heard to stop with people laughing and afterwards the dog was gone.
"That was the last thing heard and after that there was no sign of her," said Mrs Franklin. She said that the dog was not house trained and lived in an outdoor kennel so would not be suitable as a pet.
"We had her since a puppy. It is the not knowing. If they are killed in an accident, the dog is dead and you have to get over it. It is the not knowing that is awful," added Mrs Franklin.
North Cornwall District Council's dog warden reports six dogs missing since the end of January but Camelford police said around two dogs a month have gone missing since last November and that these figures are not unusual.
However, Penny Kenny receptionist at Penbode veterinary practice, Camelford, said their lost and found book listed a few missing dogs and this was "very unusual". In January a blue merle collie disappeared in Delabole, in February a beagle in pup was lost from the Roughtor area and a black Labrador cross was missing from Boscastle.
Anyone with news of Rolo, who has a blue collar and is microchipped, is asked to contact 07877 615752. Mrs Franklin can be called on 01840 770915.
