Vets get scanning info
« on: April 10, 2008, 07:17:06 PM »

Thought the attached would be of interest to your members.

At last a statement from BSAVA MAG about routine scanning of all dogs (and cats) for microchips.

It’s been a long slow progress but we are getting there bit by bit.

If your members could download this and take it to their vets it would really help.

Best wishes to all,

Debbie

22nd February, 2008.

The following is a statement on ‘veterinary practice routine scanning’ which has been agreed in the industry and is now being followed up at BSAVA and RCVA:-

‘BSAVA MAG (Microchipping Advisory Group) strongly encourages the use of microchips as the preferred means of permanent identification of dogs and cats.  However the microchip system can only be fully effective if animals that may have been chipped are routinely scanned.  This is particularly the case for animals that may have been found as strays or have been sold on as adults.

Consequently MAG encourages all veterinary practices to scan all new patients to ensure that no chip remains undetected and that known chips remain functional.  Any animals where an unexpected chip is revealed may then be returned to their rightful owner where appropriate.  MAG accepts that scanning an animal to ensure no chip is present can be a time consuming process but considers scanning to be a reasonable professional obligation.’

At Vets Get Scanning we have found that vets who are routinely scanning pets are now benefiting from more customers wanting to microchip their pets.
