Lily our 6 year old West Highland White Terrier has a nasty, yeasty black skin complaint all over her tummy and legs. She has had a course of antibiotics twice and is bathed regularly with antibacterial shampoo. She improved for a little while, but now it is back with a vengeance! Garlic and flaxseed oil ease the condition, but I'm looking for a permanent cure! What do you recommend?

Hi Justine,

I did not know you had a Westie ...!!

Chronic skin disease in Westies is usually difficult if not impossible to cure. The reason is: the underlying problem is usually an allergy (the scientific term for that condition is Atopy). Allergies are life long conditions that one can try to monitor but sadly cannot cure.

It is important that a proper diagnostic procedure is followed to make sure there is not a treatable cause for the problem:
- Skin scrapings for mites (especially fox mange and demodex mange)
- Skin impressions for yeast and bacterial infections
- Hormonal testing for hypothyroidism and cushing's disease

Allergies trigger secondary skin infections which will improve with antibiotic or antimicrobial shampoos but the problem will be recurrent.

Some drugs are used against the allergy itself but sadly can be either very expensive: Atopica

or have serious side effects: corticosteroids.

I can take a look at your dog at your convenience and perform the necessary scrapings, smears ...

Kindest regards, Julien
