Ten men have been found guilty for their part in a 'sadistic' dogfight, described by the RSPCA as one of the most gruelling and highly-attended dogfights in history.
Following a report to Crimestoppers, police discovered the dogfight on 5 February 2006 at the premises of Marlboro Interiors, Alum Rock, Birmingham. RSPCA officers were called to attend to the dogs, while police surrounded the building and arrested the participants.
Seven men, facing various charges including causing dogs to fight and possession of pit bull terriers, have been bailed to return for sentencing. Five others found guilty of attending the dogfight, have been fined (appeals have been launched by four of them).
Fourteen men were fined earlier this month after pleading guilty to attending the dogfight. At that time, District Judge Khalid Qureshi said: "The event itself is best described as a sadistic event. In my view it involved inflicting unimaginable pain without any pity for the animals."
Seriously injured Nick Sutton, prosecuting for the RSPCA, told the court how two dogs were found seriously injured and bleeding heavily. A brindle-coloured pit bull terrier had been hidden in a kitchen cupboard after an attempt to push him behind ceiling tiles had failed.
Bullet, the male brindle-coloured dog died overnight; Elvis, the other darker dog, was put to sleep 48 hours later due to his severe injuries.
RSPCA Chief Inspector Ian Briggs said: "Dog-fighting is barbaric, and this was one of the longest, most brutal and most highly-attended dogfights we've ever come across. If we're entering a new era of dogfighting, then we need to stamp it out, fast."
Encouraged to fight The court watched graphic video of the fight, which lasted at least one and three-quarter hours. The dogs were heard to squeal in pain as they were encouraged to fight.
Chief Inspector Briggs said: "Having 26 people arrested at one fight hasn't happened since the late 1980s, and shows how depressingly popular dog-fighting has become again in our major cities, despite being banned almost 200 years ago."
Anyone with any information about dog-fighting should call the RSPCA's 24-hour cruelty line in confidence on 0300 1234 999.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/7340382.stm Six people have been arrested and 14 dogs seized during raids to combat dog fighting in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Hertfordshire.
Police and RSPCA officers seized five pit-bull dogs from two properties in Ragnall, Notts, on Wednesday.
Two injured dogs and one dead pit-bull were among eight recovered from two addresses in Grantham and Kexby, Lincs. One dog was seized in Anstey, Herts.
Four men and two women were arrested in connection with dog fighting.
They are in custody awaiting questioning.
Officers said dog fighting paraphernalia including treadmills used to improve the animals' fitness were also recovered.
Dark ages
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the dead animal. The remaining dogs are now in RSPCA care.
Ch Insp Mike Butcher, of the RSPCA Special Operations Unit, said: "People may think that dog fighting has gone away but that's simply not true.
"We would ask people to continue being vigilant and call us if they suspect that dog fighting, badger baiting or cock-fighting are taking place.
"These so-called 'sports' belong in the dark ages, so hopefully we can eradicate them from the UK."
The raids were part of the RSPCA's Operation Cannon.

Suspected fighting dog found dead THE RSPCA is appealing for information following the discovery near Basingstoke of a dog believed to have been killed in illegal dog-fighting.
The carcase of the 18-month-old Dogue de Bordeaux bitch was found at 9am on Friday, in a lay-by in Greywell Road, between Maplederwell and Up Nately.
The member of the public who made the discovery alerted the RSPCA, police and local dog warden.
An examination by a vet revealed that the dog had died within the previous 24 hours.
As well as lacerations on its front and back legs and back, the dog also had deep bite marks to its head and a bloody mouth consistent with trying to defend itself.
Jan Edwards, RSPCA inspector investigating the incident, said: "Although we cannot rule out the possibility this dog was attacked by another pet and it got out of hand, it is far more likely this poor creature was involved in dog-fighting, possibly being used to bait the trained dogs before a fight.
advertisement "We are very concerned that there may be other injured dogs in need of treatment and I would urge anyone who has information about this incident to contact the RSPCA so we can ensure no other creatures are allowed to suffer in this manner."
The dog has been traced to an original owner in the Tyne and Wear area, but was sold about a year ago, via the internet, to a middle-aged woman from either Surrey or Sussex who drove a silver Lexus car.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact the confidential RSPCA cruelty and information line on 0300 1234 999 and leave a message for Inspector Jan Edwards. SEE LINK BELOW
