2009??? Surely if it's wrong to be cruel in 2009 it's wrong now. There are already plenty of laws relating to cruelty to animals but the government don't bother to enforce any of them.

Registered Charity Number 1113207

Greyhound Gap is an independant non profit making Organisation, who specialise in the rescue and rehabilitation of death row greyhounds and lurchers.
All of the dogs that are taken into our care receive a thorough assessment in a foster home environment, although occasionally we do have cause for dogs to spend sometime in kennel situations.

Greyhound Gap strive in every instance to neuter the animals in our care and people adopting puppies under the age of neutering are obliged to carry this out within a stated period of time.
Our dogs are also fully vaccinated, microchipped, de flead, wormed and receive a dental before homing.

We do ask for a set adoption fee to cover the cost of routine vet care.

Greyhound Gap home throughout the UK, but we will require a succesful homecheck, and need to have a volunteer within an hour of your home.

NB. We will in no circumstances home adult death row pound dogs with children under four even after a thorough assessment

You may be aware that the Scottish Daily Mail has uncovered yet another case of
extreme cruelty to an ex-racing Greyhound. There have been other instances in
the past similar that have also been exposed by the Daily Mail and the Mail on
Sunday. This one however is in my opinion one of the worst cases. You can read
the article by going to my website www.greyhoundmuses.com and the click
"Scottish Daily Mail article" on the left hand frame. Alternatively copy and
paste www.greyhoundmuses.com/scotlandmail.htm into your browser when you have
finished reading this e-mail.

I was totally sickened when I read of this latest atrocity and decided to create
a petition on line addressed to the UK Prime Minister and calling for an end to
Greyhound racing in the UK and Northern Ireland. I realize that there have been
others in the past who have submitted petitions calling for the same thing and
that as yet they have not been successful. I am also not egotistical enough to
think that I will succeed where they have failed, but I am asking you to support
me in this by signing my petition and then passing the URL to as many friends
and colleagues that you think might sympathize with our aims and so on. I know
that we probably won't fully achieve our aims but I believe that if we can get a
great number of signatures on our petition the people who can do something will
have to listen to us.

To sign my petition please go to
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/3400/petition.html  Just copy and paste the whole
URL into your browser, and when you get there please take a few seconds to read
the petition fully before adding your signature. When you have done that you
will be given an opportunity to send the petition on to more people. This bit is
really important. please send it to everyone in your address book whom you think
will be interested and stress to them the importance of adding their name.

Mel, The Needle Man.

Don't mourn for me when I am dead
I was raced for greed; I'm Irish bred.
No one cared if I lived or died,
I raced and lost, my owner sighed
"He's got to go, I need the space,
I've a faster hound I want to race".

At the end of the night there comes a van
Driven by Mel, the needle man.
One by one we're pushed inside
Jabbed by the needle, there's nowhere to hide.
There is no escape just fear and pain,
I'll never see the track again.

Dead bodies are heaped at the rear of the van
Killed by Mel, the needle man.
The dog before me screams and bites
But he's kicked in the guts, he's lost his fight.
Now it's my turn to go, I'm sick with fear
I see dead carcasses at the rear.

My legs grow weak, I hit the ground
Who gives a damn, I'm just a Greyhound

There is a van that goes around the racetracks and at the end of the evening, dogs that no longer perform well are killed in the back of the van for just ten pounds.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender,Your Dog! You are his life, his love, his leader! He will be yours, faithful and true to the last beat of his heart! You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion!

RSPCA warning over greyhound deaths

The greyhound industry was told to clean its act up following reports that one man had slaughtered at least 10,000 dogs at his home and then buried them on his land.

The RSPCA said that for many years it had concerns about what had happened to thousands of greyhounds after their racing careers had ended.

The Sunday Times claimed that builder's merchant David Smith had killed and buried at least 10,000 animals at his home in Seaham, County Durham.

The charity said there was "no justification" for this "huge and totally unnecessary slaughter" and demanded that the greyhound industry clean up its act.

The RSPCA said that a report three years ago, entitled The Fate Of Racing Greyhounds And Working Lurchers in Wales, suggested 12,000 dogs across the UK could be killed or discarded after their racing careers were over.

The report, which was commissioned by the All Party Group for Animal Welfare in the National Assembly for Wales, called for new controls on greyhound racing and for improvements to animal welfare.

The RSPCA said the latest report was more proof that greyhounds' lives were being cut short unnecessarily. Steve Cheetham, an RSPCA veterinary spokesman, said: "This is a huge and totally unnecessary slaughter. There is no justification for killing these animals simply because they can't do their job any more.

"It is a sad reflection on the whole industry which should be cleaning its act up. It is imperative that the industry finally admits there is a problem and works with welfare organisations to look at ways at tackling this as a matter of urgency."

Alistair McLean, chief executive of the National Greyhound Racing Club, which governs the sport, told the newspaper Mr Smith's actions amounted to a "euthanasia factory" and promised an inquiry.

David Smith refused to talk about his actions. He said: "This has caused me a lot of distress, a massive amount. I have been told not to say anything about it and everything is with the RSPCA and the police. I am devastated by all of this."

A Happy Dog Tale
« Reply #28 on: October 17, 2007, 11:49:07 AM »

JK Rowling is keeping busy after finishing the Harry Potter books by adopting a rescue greyhound.
Staff at the Scottish rescue centre had no idea who JK was when she went along with her family to pick out a pooch pal for their Jack Russell terrier, Butch.

Owner Celia Fernie only realised when JK signed a 1,000 cheque - 950 more than the home ask for - to adopt a four-year-old dog, called Sapphire.

Celia said: "I apologised and said 'I'm sorry, I didn't realise who you were!'"

JK Rowling chats to Newsround
She added: "She was very pleasant and down to earth, a real doggy person."

Like most greyhounds, Sapphire loves taking it easy and relax
Most kids would know who JK was the minute they saw her, but Celia wasn't so sure. And even when she did realise, that didn't stop her putting JK through all the same tests as everyone else before she was allowed to take Sapphire home.

She had to prove she had enough room at home and Butch had to meet Sapphire to make sure they got on with each other.

'Absolutely perfect'

Celia, who has rehomed 200 dogs since she opened two years ago, said: "She walked Sapphire up and down the driveway, with Butch and her family.

"They were marvellous with my dog and we thought 'This is just splendid'. They were just absolutely perfect, as a caring family should be."

"A dog can not speak in our language, so i will speak for them."
